Musculoskeletal Medicine covers a broad range of acute and chronic conditions causing muscle and joint pain and disability. These include:
low back strain and sciatica
neck and upper back strain +/- referred headache, chest pain or arm pain
osteoarthritis and chronic tendon strains of the shoulder, elbow, hand, hip, knee, ankle and foot
the initial diagnosis and management of inflammatory arthritis and minor fractures followed by appropriate referral
Referrals:
For new patients with musculoskeletal problems a referral from another health practitioner is desirable but not essential. New musculoskeletal patients are sent a detailed questionnaire about their problems to complete before their initial consultation. Previous patients with new musculoskeletal problems should also complete the questionnaire available from reception and forms.
Consultations.
The diagnosis and treatment of muscle and joint problems is often complex and takes considerable time. Typically, a first consultation of 40 to 70 minutes and several follow-up consultations of 20-40 minutes are required for the best results.
Simple problems may only require an initial consultation of less than 40 minutes.
